Report:
I was heading back from Ohio, and it looked like a storm was brewing. The winds kicked up and the sky got dark in a few spots. It was 87 degrees when I left Dayton and 81 an hour later when I drove through New Castle, but I thought I would stop and see what was going on. This was my first time to Westwood this year. I had some great success with decent sized fish last summer, so I had pretty good expectations. The end that you park beside has a long shoreline with 2-3' deep water that then drops to deeper water about 20' from the bank. The shallows are mostly mud with a few rocks and small vegetation, but the largemouth patrol the area fairly heavily because of the minnow activity. I tied on my favorite search bait, the Leverage Single Blade Buzzbait. I caught 2 and missed 2 on about my first 10 casts. The second one I caught was a nice 2lb+ . Then it just stopped. I had moved down the bank a little, but not to anything much different than before, but for whatever reason, they stopped hitting that buzzbait. Ambush Lures sent me a couple of their new Pop A Longs so I decided to chuck one for a while. I was throwing a natural frog color along the bank ahead of me, second cast, I connected with another nice large. The water started working all around me as minnows scattered and fled from their pursuers. I grabbed my other pole that still had the Yozuri Popper on. Then the action heated up. It was 6:40p and I was losing daylight fast. I walked the far bank, about 120 yards, and back. I caught 12 more and missed at least as many hits. I jumped in the car, it was dark and 8:12p.m. What a fun time. I can't wait to get back over there.
