Report:
I fished the lower lake at Castaic for a few hours this morning, between 8 & 10. I started to the left of the docs and fished spot-to-spot as I walked back to the buoy line. Not too many fishing being caught, and I got nothing until I got back to the buoy line. After fishing Senkos and Sculpins for quite a while, I decided to pull an oldie out of my tackle bag: Wham Lil' Fishes. You can't buy these any more (as far as I know) and the ones I have are the older hand-poured lures that a guide I fished with a few times at the upper and lower lake used to pour and sell. He may still, but I don't see them in local tackle shops any more, and there was a brief period where they were being machine poured, which always disappoints me. They are small swim baits. I have two sizes, 3/4" and 1". They have nice curly tails on them. The really nice thing is I have about 200 of em, in good condition, in a big plastic divider, so I'll be using them for a long time to come. I tied him on with size 4 hook, straight shank, with a nice sleeve-barb that helps hold the bait on the hook. I stuck the tip of the hook back into the bait, and fished it weightless. I cast it out past the same bushes I pulled one out of last week, and lightly tapped it every so often. BAM! A nice 2lber came out and ate that thing up! Strangely enough, I didn't get any more hits on it.
I then tied on a size 2 hook and pinned a Bass Assassin' Fluke (black over white) on. My second cast out (into deeper waters) and BAM! Again, a nice bass, just shy of 2lbs. This one had a lot more fight than the first though, and kept tryin' to head for the bushes and tie me up. I have a feelin' that worked for him once in the past. Not this time though. =)
I continued fishing, going back to the Sculpins and Senkos again, but never did get any more action. It was starting to heat up pretty good, so I headed home. I forgot my suntan lotion and I could feel the back of my neck starting to fry... It was time!
Happy Fishin'!
