Report:
You'd think after getting up at 2:30PST to catch an early flight home from Louisville, and spending 2 hours in Dallas Fort Worth on the way, I wouldn't do much once I got home around 1pm (landed at 12:30 in Burbank.) But, after chatting with my dad for a while about all the great trip I'd just had, and posting what content there was to post to the site, I decided Castaic just wasn't that far away. I pulled some rods out, went through all my tackle, and ended up dropping one poll and a tackle bag in the back of the truck and headed for the lower lake at Castaic. I stopped by Turners on my way, and picked up some plastics, and then again for a little more gas, but got to the lake by 5. It was a little windy, but not too bad.
I started off about 50 yards to the left of the boat ramp (when facing the water,) throwing RoboWorms on size 2 hooks. After 9 or 10 casts, I managed to hook up a small bass, about 10 inches. I worked my way towards the boat ramp, and even fished it for a few minutes, but didn't even see anything picking it up, so I decided to hop back in the truck, and drive up to the second entrance to the lower lake, where the campgrounds are. There is a day-use parking lot there, but I asked the guy in the guard shack if I could go park down at the end of the road, past the campgrounds, and he said sure. It is rare that they will, but on a Sunday evening, when there aren't many campers there, they are more apt to. It was worth it too, because I like the far north end of the lake by the buoy line, but it's quite a hike from that day-use lot. It's a mild walk from the end of "the campers road".
When I got down there, the wind had picked up a bit (was plowing SW to NE) and tossing those 4" RoboWorms wasn't workin' for me. I had put a split shot on earlier, but up at this end of the lake there's a lot more rip-rap to get caught in, so I decided to try out the Senkos. I tied on a 2/0 hook, slipped one on (slightly burying the knot & eye) and tossed 'em out. On my 3rd cast I got a good hit, but it was more of a bump and run, and I never even tried to set the hook. Instead, I let it sit and then gave it a few taps, trying to entice another strike. No-Go. After a few more casts though, I got another pick up, and this time he was running with it. I pinned him good. =) He wasn't gettin' away. He was 15", and weighed about a pound I'd say.
After a while of no more strikes there, I moved a bit further north, and found some bushes sitting out in the water. I cast the Senko out past it and had two nice hits, but missed 'em both. I stopped, took a deep breath and knew that if I cast out there again, this fish was gonna pick it up. Third cast out there, and BAM, he it it HARD. I set the hook good and fought this fish for a little bit. Sitting on 6lb test that was a bit too old, I didn't want to loose 'em. This guy was about 19 inches, and probably weighed about 3 pounds.
I continued to fish the bushes, but it was a pretty small area, and nothing else ever hit it. It was getting late so I slowly made my way back, stopping every 10-20 yards and tossing a Senko in. I never got another good hit after that though. I didn't really need it though, that 3 pounder felt GOOD.
I released all of the fish I caught.
Happy Fishin'!
