Tips to getting sponsors for fishing Tournaments
(Add to Favorites)
Posted Monday, August 29th, 2005 to Getting Sponsored
Getting sponsored to fish tournaments is not as difficult as it may seem, especially if you consider these techniques.
One of the most important steps in getting sponsored to fish tournaments (whether you fish for bass, walleye, crappie, musky, redfish, marlin, etc.) is to focus on what YOU CAN DO for your sponsor, not what your sponsor can do for you.
The reason you should do this is because fishing tackle manufacturers, as a whole, are a very tight knit group and they are bombarded with sponsorship requests daily. Most of the sponsorship requests are resumes, and the essence of a resume is: I am worthy and this is why. In plain and simple language, someone submitting a resume believes the company should sponsor them because they're somebody.
And believe me, fishing companies DAILY receive these requests by the hundreds. That can all add up to over 2000 requests for products or financial support monthly. You can start to see how one resume begins to look just like the other - can't you?
So, I recommend you try and reverse the approach.
When trying to obtain sponsorship from a company, first make a list of the things you could do for your potential sponsor, that would help them make more sales or gain more exposure - not what your potential sponsor should do for you because of who you are.
Put yourself in the potential sponsors shoes. Does he want to give you money so you can fish? More than likely he or she doesn't want to do that. No matter what type of business you are contacting for sponsorship, they want to know what's in it for me! In other words, WHAT WILL YOU DO FOR ME?
To answer that question, pretend you were in your senior year in high school and your senior paper had to be written on: TEN WAYS TO PROMOTE A POTENTIAL SPONSOR. If that were the case, what's the first thing you'd do? Research… right? Nowadays, you can pretty much get all the information you need on any subject, from the World Wide Web. Do some research and compile a list of benefits you could offer.
Now, do the same thing when preparing to contact YOUR potential sponsors. When you approach them with your 7, 8, or 10 ways YOU WILL help promote them; you're answering their question - "WHAT WILL YOU DO FOR ME?"
And by the way, I might suggest that you look OUTSIDE of the fishing industry for potential sponsors.
Remember these tips the next time you approach a potential sponsor and you'll dramatically increase your chances of getting sponsored to fish tournaments.
