The Bass Pro Diary
About the ''Bass Pro Diary'' (Add to Favorites)

Introduction to "The Bass Pro Diary", a look into the real life of being a bass pro on the circuts.

Have you ever wondered what it is like being a tournament professional? What demands there are on your time? What keeps you motivated? What drives you crazy? What keeps you going and focused day in and day out? Those are the types of questions I hope to answer throughout this continuing column. My goal is to report to you, first hand, what goes on with my ventures, tours, and public relations, all associated with the sport of professional tournament bass fishing. I will focus on reporting an article for every event that I am involved in - from seminars to tournaments - from factory tours to sport shows. You will be reading my “Bass Diary” revolving around the actual events I encounter in my life.

About me, I am a tournament professional residing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I am in good standing with the Bass Anglers Sportsmen Society (ABP), The Canadian Association of Professional Bass Anglers, and FLW Outdoors. I compete in many professional level tournaments in both the United States and Canada, as well as on an amateur level by participating in local club and charity tournaments that (in my mind) are the backbone of everything bass tournaments are all about. I also write articles for two web sites (in addition to largemouthbass.com), do product demonstrations, and conduct seminars around my area. I have several sponsors that I work with, including Mojo Pro Tackle, Bitzer Creek, Gold Island Rods, Lucky Strike Bait Works, Stitch-It Embroidery, Network Tackle Supply, Kick’n Bass, and Hi-Seas Monofilament.

I hope that you will bookmark the largemouthbass.com web site for future reference, and stop back frequently to read up on my ventures. I will be sure to keep you posted, as well as include many different pointers that will hopefully improve your fishing skills. Who knows, maybe I will make a drastic mistake - and you could learn from that mistake?
Well, here we go. This will conclude the introduction section of this report, and allow me the opportunity to inform you all about what I had participated in over the past weekend......

May 18, 2002...

I had the opportunity to participate in the Kenosha Public Museum’s “Fish-Tival” event on Saturday. This festival is the opening ceremony for the traveling commercial fishing exhibit that is currently on display at this wonderful hometown museum. One special feature of the Fish-Tival was the guest exhibit, where fishing charter companies, tropical fish stores, and sport fishermen like myself interact with the people visiting the trade show. I was asked by the museum’s education director if I could come down to the museum to set up a trade-show style booth where I would be able to display various fishing tackle products for the visiting children to touch. What made the opportunity very nice was the fact I could present the various products manufactured by my sponsors - letting the public have a hands-on opportunity to check out the quality each product has to offer (the children loved the plastic Mojo worms and lizards, while the adult highlight was to smell the Kick’n Bass Fish Attractant scents). People of all age groups were present to meet me and see the products.
As a member of the Bitzer Creek Pro-Staff, I was allowed to hand out samples of Bitzer Creek’s Zip Lures (metal blade baits) to select visitors at my booth. Many adults and children got to leave with a sample.

The funniest story that came across my booth that day happened when two young boys spent quite a bit of time questioning me about the types of fish I like to pursue and what baits I prefer for different bass species. I did spend quite a bit of time instructing the boys about my techniques and tackle, including using the Zip Lure, and felt obligated to offer each one of them a sample. They were so excited, and I made sure that they each received one with bright color decals. But it only took about 10 minutes for one of the boys came back to me with his Zip Lure and ask, “Could I please have a boy lure instead of this one?” At first I questioned what he was referring to - only to see him holding a lure that was white with a pink stripe across the top. I found out that day that a “boy” lure consists of any type of lure that does not have a trace of pink on it! The boy opted to take a Zip Lure that did not have any type of decal on it at all (a plain metal blade) rather than wind up fishing with a “girl” lure. Well, maybe he will be beat by some girl in a tournament (someday) who will be using the lure he passed up at my booth!
