The Hard Way (Almost) (Add to Favorites)

How I almost lost my first large largemouth!

My daughter used to live on the bank of an old slough made from an underground spring and the runoff from the Pend Oreille River where it runs through a rural area about six miles north of our town. We used the slough for swimming and fishing both, since the spring kept it pretty clear. We often saw bass of various sizes near the shore, but never one as large as the old boy that hung out under a dock on the neighboring property.
One fine day when the neighbor wasn't home, I took my fishing pole and a container of worms over to the dock and decided to try my luck. This happened to be right in the beginning of the season; the first time I went fishing since the previous year. I dropped the line in the water close to the dock and it was instantly hit by the huge (to me) fish. My heart was pounding with excitement as I struggled with the fish, as I had no net. I finally pulled him out of the water and just as I got him over the dock, I watched my hook slip off the old knot on my line and he hit the deck and started flipping around. I threw down my pole and threw myself on the fish to immobilize him while I figured out what to do next. Luckily, I got him off the dock and into my daughter's bathtub for a pleasant dinner surprise for us. He weighed about three pounds, which isn't very big, but was the biggest one I had caught up until then.
This taught me a valuable lesson: always check your equipment and make sure everything is in tip-top shape before starting a new season (or any other time, for that matter). I would have been really upset with myself if I had lost him because of my own carelessness.
