Lost Fish (Add to Favorites)

A camping and fishing trip at a farm in Illinois.

There were a bunch of us that went on a camping and fishing trip at a farm for a long weekend, we were friends of the guy that owned the farm. There was a river that ran through the farm that we fished and swam in it. Some of the guys put a pig on to roast, we fished, swam, played cards, and played some softball. We were using worms, minnows, cutbait and stinkbait to fish. We were catching sun fish, catfish, suckers and bullheads. We cooked a mess of them up and had them for supper a couple nights. We finished fishing one night and left the fish on the stringers in the river. The next morning went to get the fish, the stringer was wiped clean of the fish except for some pieces. We were upset at ourselves for leaving them on the stringer all night. My folks were there with us, they had brought their boat. My Dad took off up river in his boat with his fishing gear and a large throw net. He was gone awhile. We were getting worried about him, then we seen him come around the bend in the river. He brought the boat up to shore, he had a big smile on his face. He told us he had an idea what got our fish, he then pulled up the throw net and there were some snapping turtles in it. We pulled his boat up on shore, he emptied his net into the boat. There were four snappers that dropped into the bottom of the boat. Three of them were about the size of a lid for a five gallon bucket and the other one I swear was twice the size. My Dad loved cooking and eating turtle meat. He would fry it up like chicken, but it didn't taste like chicken, it had it's own taste. He would take a big stick, put in front of the turtles mouth and move it away a little and the turtle would stick his neck out and grab hold of the stick. Dad would cut its head off and then clean it. He cleaned them all, put them on ice to take home for later meals. When we saw the size of those turtles we didn't do any more swimming in the river. We had our pig on the last day, man was it good.
