A trip in the 70s to Sturgeon Bay to fish for Coho Salmon
A guy I used to work with, had an old school bus converted to a camper. He talked four of us, into going Coho Salmon fishing with him. He wasn't sure, what tackle we would use so we just took our poles. It took us a few hours to get there we were all excited. We stopped at a bait shop and they sold us large weighted treble hooks. He said, that's what they were using to fish the Coho. We got to the spot, it was real pretty, it had a light house and the keepers house it looked like a postcard. There was an canal or creek, next to the light house that came off the main water. On both sides of the creek, there were elbow to elbow people casting their lines and reeling back in. They had those big treble hooks on, they were snagging the Coho and someone else's line too. I had never, seen anything like it. The salmon, were coming in from the big water going up the creek to spawn, as they got closer to spawning the darker color they turned. I was told they die after they spawn. We just barely found a place, to throw our line in. Well some guy snagged my line, the same happened to my buddies. This kind of fishing was not for us, so we decided to walk up the creek till it got shallow. I am wading around in the creek, when I seen this big fish coming at me. I reached down got a hold of him and he was so slippery I couldn't hold on. I not only lost the fish but lost my footing and fell on my rear end in the water. We went up watched them clean fish, there were whole bunch of people there. Some guys didn't want theirs and gave us some and they were big. We cleaned them, some of them were full of eggs. A guy took us over to some fellas, that were buying the eggs for 50 cents a pound. We sold what we had and it helped pay for our gas back. I took the fish to my folks and Dad cut it into stakes seasoned it put lemon juice on it and baked it. It was good and I had fun but I don't want to fish like that again.
