How I enjoyed my long weekend.
I have always been very lucky. I remember a time with my daughter that we took a picture of 5 generations... from both sides of my family. My mom's and dad's. That means that on one day in 1992 I had a daughter, a parent, a grandmother, and great grandmother all living. Both sides. And you know, at that time I had grandfathers still living on both sides as well. Remarkable.
Well, my great grandmothers have since past. And so have both my grandmother. But my Dad's dad and my mom's dad continue to carry the torch of the "Greatest Generation". I didn't coin the phrase. But I can certainly appreciate it.
Last fall I had the honor of visiting Washington D.C. with both of my grandfathers, and my dad as well. We saw the Washington Monument. We saw the Lincoln Memorial. We visited Arlington National Cemetery. We did it all. The Smithsonian. But what I was there for was the WWII Memorial. My grandfathers both served. Navy, both of them. Pacific, both of them. Alive. Both of them. They don't talk about the war much. I certainly learn more about it from books and T.V. But what I don't get from books and T.V. is the feeling I got seeing them both in front of the Field of Stars that contains more than 4,000 gold stars and commemorates the 442,000 American casualties of World War II, and realizing that if either of them had been represented on that wall, I wouldn't be here today. I don't get from books the feeling of pride when active Marines, and Soldiers introduce themselves to my grandfathers and thank them for their service, which happened several times on our trip. And I don't get from T.V. the respect that I have for all who SERVE. Past, present, and future to keeping the rights of this great nation free. And for all those who give the ultimate sacrifice so that I can make a trip to Washington D.C. with my dad, and his dad on a crisp weekend in October without having to fear.
I sleep soundly at night. Thank you. God Bless America and its Hero's on this Memorial Day Holiday.
