I'm 17, only 16 when it happened--I was fishin' with a buddy behind my house - I live on a marshy part of my lake, bass love to come in here and spawn every year about the same time. That lasts almost a month, it's bass heaven!! The best part on the lake!! I love it. Any ways, I was out on my Jon boat, half docked on a bog, and I was using a white buzz-bait. Out about 20 feet from where I was, I saw a little snake (northern pike) about 20 inches long. I cast at it, but cast way too far so i reeled in really fast, hopin' to get the bait there before it took off. I was reelin' fast!! And my friend said "Holly Cow!" and off to the side of the boat, like 5 feet in front of us, shot out like a 25 inch + bass!!! It had a pretty nice angle at my bait, so I slowed down. The pike took off at it, so I sped way up again. Before I could see where the bass went it hopped like 3 feet out of the water with my buzz-bait hangin' out of its mouth!! When it hit the water, there was a huge splash!! Man, I almost wet myself! You don't know nervous until you have a 10lb+ bass on your line, which was only 6lb test (me and my friends get a kick fishin' with light line for big fish.) I loosened my drag a/s/a/p. I had never seen a fish that spent so much time out of the water!! It jumped like 20 times, takin' out line every time! I feared I would lose it. My friend would not shut up!!..."quit horsin' it man!" "Your gonna lose it if you do that!" I was so annoyed I just about elbowed him into the water. Anyways, I remember seen this things eyes, which me and my buddy both think was bad luck!! They were the size of golf balls, no lie!! And as soon as it hit the water that last time, my line slacked! I thought I had lost him but then BAM! It took off again and snapped my line! I remember seein' the v-waves as it swam away! My legs where shaken really bad! Fishin' that spring just wasn't the same after that!
