Fishing below locks on Mississippi River

One fall day, a buddy of mine and me were fishing below the locks on the Mississippi River. If you have never fished below the locks, I am here to tell you the water can get real choppy and wild. We were in a V shaped boat, it was deep inside but it was so choppy the water was splashing over the sides. I was getting pretty nervous, I told my buddy I wanted to go fish the back waters where it was calm. He agreed, we headed into the back waters. It was nice back there, some shade trees over hanging the banks and the water was calm. We were fishing with night crawlers and dough balls scented with vanilla extract. We caught some bull heads and some small perch. We started
catching, some carp and some mud cat. My buddy, had a pretty good size treble hook, with a dough ball on it rigged on his line. He cast out, in a few minutes had a good hit, he set the hook, the fish took off and started to fight. After a few minutes, it was like the fish gave up fighting. It was like it was in a snag. We used the oars to get the boat, to where his line went down in the water. He reached down, started pulling his line in and a big net surfaced. I got to where he was, we both grabbed a hold of the net and tugged. His fish, which was a carp was caught in this net. This net was full of all different kinds of fish, it was so heavy, we couldn't pull it up to see the whole net. My buddy was all excited, he wanted to take a bunch of the fish that were in the net home with us. I didn't want any part of that. I figured it was someones net, it would be like stealing to take some fish from the net. I won the argument, we cut his line because his carp was caught in the net. We left not long after that. We stopped at a cafe just up the road to get something to eat, we were telling this guy in the cafe about the net. He told us, that it was probably a commercial fisherman's net. He said that we would be in big trouble if we would have taken some of those fish and been caught taking them. I sure am glad we avoided trouble by not taking some of those fish.
