Cooper Lake State Park is 15 miles from Sulphur springs Texas.
Cooper Lake state Park, has two separate campgrounds. The South Sulphur Unit, which is the largest and Doctors Creek Unit, which is the smallest campground. Cooper lake, is 19,305 surface-acres its a big lake. We have camped and fished, South Sulphur Springs Unit many times. The campground is pretty, kept up real well. Cabins, screen shelters, tent and camper sites available. Well maintained restrooms and showers.
We went camping there, started fishing off of one of the piers at noon. I mean it was 100 in the shade. Everyone on the pier, said the fishing was slow that it was too hot. We set up used stinkbait and night crawlers for bait for catfish. I had some stinkbait on one pole night crawlers on the other. Wham, five minutes after we cast out, I caught a five pound channel cat on the stinkbait put up a heck of a fight. My wife caught a couple three to four pound range right after that on worms. We went a spell and didn't catch anything for a couple of hours. Then we started catching small catfish, a bunch of them 10-11 inches they have to be 12 inches to keep them but they were fun to catch. We brought a sack lunch, that we ate for supper and decided to fish thru the evening. When it started to get dark we started catching them again lots of small ones and five more keepers. We were the only ones sitting on the pier, the moon came up later and was orange and it was a huge full moon it was real pretty.
It was a great day caught loads of fish and then a romantic evening with just my wife and me on the pier with the huge orange full moon. Those are days we all dream about.
