Night Crawlers aka Dew Worms (Add to Favorites)

Our little business and how we stocked up.

Back in the 50s, when I was a kid we had us a little business. Most kids sold lemonade or cool-aid. We were a little different, we loved to fish and we decided to sell something for fishing- Night Crawlers aka Dew Worms. We built us a box, shredded newspaper mixed with dirt for bedding, kept it wet down, stored it in the cool cellar with the worms in it. We didn't know what to feed them, so we sprinkled gold fish food in the box. The food disappeared, the worms grew good size, so they must of liked it. We sold them for 25 cents a dozen and we had a hard time keeping them in stock. We had a little sign nailed to a tree out front of the house, Dew Worms 25 cents a dozen.. We would replenish our stock, by going out to this country club golf course at night. We weren't supposed to be there, but we figured no one would be out there at night. The worms would come out of the ground, we would shine a flashlight to the side of them, very quickly reach down and pick them up before they spooked and went back in the ground they were fast boy you had to be fast. We used to call it picking worms. We would fill coffee cans that we had dirt in, with the worms. Sometimes when we were all done we would strip down to our skivys and go swimming in the outdoor pool at the country club. One night a security card came around in his car and chased us off, lucky he didn't catch us, we ran carrying our clothes and worms like our rear ends were on fire. We skipped the swimming after that and just stuck to picking worms.
