We support our Troops

A weekend fishing trip made me realize just how supportive people are of our Troops.
A few weekends ago my fishing partner and I decided to plan a trip to the famous Lake Fork, Texas. We are both career military and stationed about 5 hours away at Fort Polk, Louisiana. My partner has been in the Army for 29 years and retires this summer. We both have heard about the lunkers at Lake Fork and figured this would be a great opportunity to get away from the wives for the weekend.
Now, the nice thing about being in the Army is they will move you to some very nice bass fishing areas. The bad thing is they will usually only allow you to enjoy it for a couple years. It seems about the time we start learning a new lake, we're moving again.
Anyhow, we were able to get a weekend off and packed up the boat and truck with only the necessities on Friday night and took off around 9 p.m. My buddy made reservations at a little campground on the East side of the lake called "Fork in the Road" for Friday and Saturday night. We planned to fish all day Saturday, sleep on a cot under the stars Saturday night, and fish for a few hours on Sunday before heading home. The goal was to make the trip for less than $150 dollars counting gas, license, food, and campground. We stopped at the local Wal-Mart about 1 a.m. Saturday morning to get our fishing license. The clerk in the Sporting Good department told us that since we were active military we could buy a Texas resident fishing license at the same cost. We both looked at each other and said "I like this state already". We've only been in Texas a few minutes and we're already saving money. Since we arrived at the campground late, we decided to fish at first light and settle up with the campground manager when we came back for lunch. They had a launch site at the campground. When we came back the manager drove up in his golf cart and introduced himself as "Mack" and began to tell us how much he and his family appreciate what we do. He told us that there would be no charge for staying there and to come back whenever we get the chance for free. He then proceeded to tell us some good places to fish and a few local secrets. All in all it was a great weekend and we met our goal of keeping it cheap. My hat goes off to Texas for supporting our Troops! Thank you.
