An out of the box idea that gains my confidence every time I use it.
You know, you meet a lot of different people in a lifetime. I have been extremely lucky to meet numerous people that have very similar interests to my own. On sites like this you obviously have a better chance to meet people who have common interests, but you are not guaranteed to meet people that you will get along very well with. I have and I am fortunate.
Among the countless folks that I message with back and forth almost daily, Curt Strutz of Leverage Lures and I started a conversation about Leverage Spinnerbaits. I was interested in the concept almost immediately. As I am a curious person by nature, I did a little homework.
I visited their site right off. Very nice site. Very informative. The first thing I noticed was Roland Martin, we all have heard of him, there on the front page smiling and holding a Leverage Spinnerbait. There was instant credibility to me. I mean Roland is a strong contender in the Greatest Angler Contest but that wouldn't be enough.
I was in Cincinnati, OH about a week later and stopped by Bass Pro Shops. There in the spinnerbait aisle with all the others, Strike King, Booyah, Terminator and all the others was about 30 pegs of Leverage Spinnerbaits. What caught me eye first were the colors. Shiny skirts, and standout vibrant colors on the heads. They were very nice looking, realistic, flashy. The second thing I noticed was the sizes. 3/16th oz. up to the 3/4oz. I personally need that kind of range. I have a lot of little spots I frequent where you just aren't going to catch huge bass. You can catch a ton of bass, but they aren't going to be huge. They are going to have a lot of pressure, and the forage is not very big. But I fish a lot of different water, in a lot of different areas, so the larger sizes would be perfect for some trophy hunting, like my club's Turkey Season trip at the end of April. When the huge females are lurking and irritated. Perfect Spinnerbait season. I grabbed 4. 4 different colors, 3 sizes. I was able to throw them later that same week.
You know how the water starts to warm, and a spring rain has made the water dirty and you need to throw something that bass can hear, feel? That is where I found myself. Chucking a spinnerbait. Nothing out of the ordinary, the difference came when I caught one. I normally use a fairly light set up, easier for me to hit the different waters I fish with lighter equipment than big stuff. So I cannot muscle fish to me with my typical setup. I have to work them a little. The Flexible Hook system that all the Leverage Products have, spinnerbaits/buzzbaits, allowed me to work fish, my concern for fish throwing the hook dissipated a little more with everyone that I caught. Just as Curt had told me, when the fish shake, rattle and roll, the flexibility of the Leverage Spinnerbait allows the hook to stay in place, and does not give the spinnerbait the ability to use the arm as leverage to pry the hook free. I have to say. They have worked like a charm. Granted, the big test is coming up. I have tourneys, outings and my turkey trip all in the next 4 weeks. So they are going to get a heck of a workout. But I do know that confidence is a major part of the success you have throwing any bait. And I have the confidence in Leverage Spinnerbaits to throw them first out of my box when the conditions are right for a spinnerbait.
