From Fishing Club to Ambush Lures Pro Staff...
If you have had the chance to read any of my previous articles, you know that I am average Joe weekend (ok some week days) angler. The last few weeks have been a fantastic whirlwind of activity that may change my fishing life Forever.
If you are interested in advancing your Fishing resume'... this will not be the end all, beat all guide. But it will be a good read. I am a current Pro Staff Member for three wonderful lure manufacturers. Ambush Lures. Sqworm Tackle. And Hart Tackle. What does that mean? To be completely honest, I am just starting to find out. It can mean quite a bit of work. I mean these manufacturers are looking for people to do a JOB. Don't kid yourself. It is a JOB. Can it be a fun and rewarding JOB? Sure. But just like heading to a factory everyday, you have to work for it. You can't expect to send a few resume's, throw out a few emails and then sit back and watch your free tackle roll in. However, you don't necessarily have to head out and sign up for every tournament you can find, or go out and buy the most expensive boat and truck. You do however have to have something to offer these companies. Me? I am a salesman. I travel 3 states, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky for a living. I fish regularly in all three. That gives me something that a lot of local tourney guys don't have. 15+ years of sales experience and a large audience. I fish a few tourneys here and there. But I accomplish more for my manufacturers every day of the week than I ever could in 10 hours on a lake on Saturday. I am on the water almost daily. Read my reports if you think I jest.
That brings me to another quality that I have. I am an active participant in no less than 4 forums DAILY. A year or so ago, when Alan Jones and I decided to found the Tri State Fishing Club, I started posting messages, reports, photo's and anything that related to fishing to any site I could find that would allow me to. Today I make a point to visit and "check in" at www.largemouthbass.com, www.ultimatebass.com, www.indianainfo.net, www.indianasmallmouth.com, as well as numerous Yahoo Groups about fishing every day. This allows me to have contacts and a forum on several sites to get word to many anglers about my manufacturers. Nothing shouts you need an Ambush Stealth Diver more than a report that says I caught 15 Largemouths throwing them, and pictures to prove it.
A word of warning. Most sites are trying to either stay afloat with their sponsors, or trying to make a buck. So abide by the rules of the site and how you talk up your sponsors. If you work within their rules, and heck maybe even bring something to the table from one of your sponsors, then you can have a great relationship. I have met more good people in the fishing industy in the last few months than I have on a lifetime of water. Like Thomas Porter who runs www.largemouthbass.com. And Ronnie Broussard who first asked me about being a Pro Staffer and who is directly responsible for all three of my Sponsors. And Roy Roper who is the Director or Pro Staff for Ambush who has let me jump in whole hog with Ambush and become an instant part of the team. Or the hundreds of members of all the forums that I participate in. People who may not know you if they had to pick you out of a line-up, but that will offer to take you out in their boat fishing if you are ever in their neck of the woods. So if WarEagle, or WarEagle71 ever tells you to give him a call when you are in Indiana, Kentucky or Ohio... you should accept the offer, and get ready to try out a Cajun Thunder Spinner from Sqworm, or a Powertail Craw from Ambush.
I have been given a great opportunity, and I owe a lot of thanks to a lot of people. But the best way I can think of to thank them, is to do what I am asked and then some. And that is what I intend to do. I am currently working with Roy Roper and the good folks at Ambush Lures to bring together an E-Newsletter that will be published 5-1-05. And with Ronnie to get the word out about the great products of Sqworm. And heck, I get to fish in between. It's ain't all bad.
By the way... I received a heck of a cool Ambush Hat in the mail last week. I guess the Tri State Fishing Club ones can wait.
