Fishing Stories
Trip of a lifetime due to a gracious bass that got away. (Add to Favorites)

I had the fishing trip you only dream about due to a bass that I didn't catch.

I had been planning a trip with my fishing partner to Amistad Res in March of last year. Due to Murphy's Law, my partner couldn't go. At the last minute, I decided to go by myself. I had a tip on what the fish were biting on from a friend that was down there the prior weekend. He told me they were biting on lizards with no weight in 10 to 12' of clear water up the river.
I got down there late Friday. I have a 35 minute boat ride one way from dock to where I fish. I loaded up my sleeping gear & took off. I had just enough time before dark to find where I was going to fish the next day. I went into a cove past the clear water into murky water to spend the night. The water was murky due to the Rio Grande River was coming down from heavy rains. I slept on my boat that night.
I woke up the next morning before daybreak. Rigged up my gear. Started throwing a topwater bait until it got light enough to see exactly where I was throwing. The 3rd cast something exploded on my bait. I'm thinking wall hanger. Pulled in 7 lb striper. I have a set of digital scales in my boat.
That wasn't what I was after, but what a way to start out.
I'm fishing out of this cove to my clear water. I turn out of the cove, & a strong wind hits me in the face. There goes my worm fishing without a weight. So I grab a rod rigged w/ a crankbait. I'm still in murky water heading to my clear water. I start putting keeper bass in the boat on a stretch of bank 200 yds long. Then it happened. I broke off on a fish & lost my bait. Of course I didn't have another one like it. I rigged up one as close to the one I lost. While I was doing this, I heard a fish jump out of the water. I've drifted about 20 yds from where I broke off. I resumed casting. I haven't gotten a single bite on this lure yet. The fish jumped out again. This time I seen it. About 4 lber. I troll back to where he is jumping. He jumps again. This time I see my crankbait sling out of his mouth. Yes it happened. I retrieved my bait. Fished with it the rest of that day & the next day. I had a 5 fish 28 lb stringer on Sat & a 5 fish 23 lb stringer on Sunday.
I was culling fish by 10:30 AM both days. I had my bait chunked by 5 -8 lb bass 7 times in 2 days. I lost 2 fish that was 10 lbs or better trying to net one & the other went under my boat & straightened out all three treble hooks on my bait. I never made it to that clear water or used that weightless worm. This trip of a lifetime was made possible by a black bass that got away, but was gracious enough to give me my crankbait back at 8:00 AM Sat morning.
