Making the Trip to Grayslake (Add to Favorites)

The kids of Grayslake, Illinois get a lesson in fishing - better than what they could ever learn while swimming in a school.

Today found me taking an hour+ drive into northern Illinois to be a featured speaker in the city of Grayslake at the Grayslake Summer Days Festival. This is a small hometown festival that takes place right in the heart of the community’s downtown area.
I was all geared up to do a kids seminar (on the main stage), and that is exactly what I did. Before me on the stage was a dog trainer, who had a Guinness Book of World Records recorded dog in his act (I guess it is the only dog who can walk up a flight of stairs using only her hind legs). The dog show drew many children, and they were all too willing to participate by getting involved as volunteers. I felt that I had the crowd of my dreams.
Following the dog show, I got up on stage and began my presentation. It took only a few minutes, and there was a decent sized crowd of children being entertained by my show. There is one part of my kids presentation where I bring three volunteers up on stage to “audition” for the role of being my fish. This included having each of the three children do their best fish impression, and the audience (by applause) votes for their favorite. I did this routine, and selected three children. Was I wrong about the involvement of these kids - only one of them would try to do a fish impression, and the other two would refuse to participate. What can I say - it was a tough crowd!
The seminar concluded, and the children spent more time talking with me at the foot of the stage that they spent actually watching my presentation. That is all right with me, though, as talking with the kids one-on-one is more gratifying that doing a mass-presentation to them. It gives me a chance to answer basic questions they may have, hand out a few samples, show off some of my sponsor’s products, and give the kids some encouragement. Speaking (and fishing) professionally is so much more than being in the spotlight or on stage. It is about making the difference in the life of one family or one child. If I can make just one person happy, or turn just one person on to the sport of fishing - my job has been done for that day.
