Let The Sun Shine In!

Despite threatening wheather and cloudy skies, the sun manages to make an appearance (along with Curt) at the Green Lake County Junior Free Fair.
August 4th, 2002
I had received notice of the opportunity to do a fishing technique clinic at the Green County Free Fair (in Green Lake, Wisconsin), and as always - I was there doing a presentation. It was a bit scary, though.
As I woke up the morning of the 4th, the first thing I did (as always) is turn on the television and see what the weather would be like. Having been a drought season here in Wisconsin (the boat launch ramps around here have been terrible), I was not-so-eager to see what the temperature and heat index would be for the day. Much to my surprise, the weatherman informed me that the temperatures would be in the high 70's and low 80's. I was excited for the temp, but when the ran forecast came into play - look out! Isolated and severe thunderstorms were in the picture, and I had no idea if I would be speaking indoors or outdoors.
Either way, I am a man of my word - and if the Green Lake County Fair was expecting me there, I was going to be there rain or shine! While getting ready for the day, I did notice it starting to rain outside in my hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. My wife asked me if it was even worth going (rain + lightning = no crowd at my seminar), but I insisted we make the 1 1/2 hour drive north to Green Lake.
On the ride there, we passed under some very nasty looking storm clouds, and hit some scattered droppings of rain. We managed to plug on, heading right into the storm front that lied ahead - me, my wife, and our screaming (and very over-tired) seven month old in the back seat. We wanted to bring the baby along, since he had never had the chance to see farm animals in his life - and what better place than at a county fair.
We arrived in Green Lake to partly cloudy (yet somewhat dark) skies. I was pleased to find out that I was set to speak at 3:00 on the pavilion stage, that was an enormous tent with ample seating and a stage all underneath it. I rested a little bit easy, and started to almost hope it would begin to rain a little bit around 3:00, driving people underneath the tent for shelter, and subjecting them to my program. I always seem to do better with a larger crowd.
I can't complain too much, because the weather did clear up, and the sun made a decent appearance. It made (at the least) an enjoyable early afternoon for my family, as we walked around the fair grounds looking at the animals, exhibits, and feeling the wonderful sense of community that thrives in Green Lake.
Three o'clock did make its appearance, and so did I. I wound up having an average sized crowd (my wife counted about 30 listeners at the seminar), as well as people who just stopped in for a quick break from the sun, or to enjoy a rest in one of the chairs. I did have to make some arrangements in my clinic, as I was anticipating the audience to be mostly kids and young adults. The audience I seemed to generate for that seminar probably had an average age of 68 years old! In fact, I actually got excited to see one young man (about 10 years old) come and sit right in the front row - providing me with a volunteer for my Kick'n Bass Fish Attractant smelling demonstration on stage. I tell you, there is nothing more humorous that selecting an excited youth to come up and participate by making him/her take a big sniff of Kick'n Bass' Crawfish scent stink-bait. It gets a great big smile from the crowd, and a great big expression from the volunteer!
The seminar was a big success, and following a nice set of applause from the audience I was available to answer questions given to me by many of the “old timer” anglers from Green Lake. I had a wonderful time.
