Kid's Fishing Derby Rocks The River!

Small bass take the bait, but the catfish become the purr-fect catch for the youth during the second tournament in the series.
July 20, 2002
Today was the second of our three qualifying fishing derbies for the church kid’s summer fishing program. We had the opportunity to fish in the Wisconsin city of Waterford, and drop our lines into the Fox River. It wound up to be a day of mixed bags and good times.
We got a late start in the derby - but before things got underway, our group had (in practice) already landed several decent sized catfish, a bluegill, and a bullhead. The cats were all caught on a traditional stink bait mixture dabbed on a catfish lure, and the others were caught using nightcrawlers.
We did eventually get things underway, and wound up landing a tiny smallmouth bass just a few yards following the river’s dam. The advantage to our fisharee derby is that size does not matter (nor does species), and the important thing is that the kids get fish on their hooks. This keeps things fair for all children involved, regardless of their age or experience.
The youth did bring in another 13” catfish (that now counted for the tournament), another smallmouth bass (only a few inches), a bullhead, and two more bluegill. Only five fish were caught by the kids during the 2 hour fisharee. It was not a lot of fish, but still a great time for everybody who participated.
One item of interest (and this was a first for our group) involved having a game warden show up at the river site and request seeing everybody’s fishing license. You may think that this is no big deal, but when you have 22 children (in addition to the adults who were fishing and coaching) - getting everybody cleared to fish can be quite a chore. The only advantage to the license search revolved around the fact that the warden is familiar with the lake (Tichigan) where our end of the year tournament will be held for the kids. He gave me some good tips about where the bass are hanging around on the lake, as well as an update that Tichigan Lake is producing a decent level of bass this year. We were all excited about that news.
One of the companies backing our efforts in the kids fishing derby series is Bitzer Creek, makers of the Zip Lure. Bitzer Creek was ever-so willing to donate a Zip Lure to each of the youth who participated in the event for the day. It is so pleasing to see the children get excited about getting a prize for their daily efforts (even if they did not score a fish for that particular derby). The children were all excited about their Zips, and were appreciative of Bitzer Creek for backing these events. This program has touched so many youth already, and has given the children an alternative to gangs, drugs, and other troubles that kids find themselves getting into during their summers off of school. We are already making plans to continue this program for next year - it has made that much of a difference in the lives of so many, including myself.
