We only moved into our lakefront home a couple months ago, but I have found it to be great bass fishing!! The other day while fishing this one spot, while using a rubber salamander with worm weight, I hooked into a rather large bass. When he got up to the side of the boat, he shook and either cut my Spiderwire 30-lb test or the line broke at the knot. As his mouth was about eight inches in diameter I'm guessing he would weigh in at about 10 or11 lbs. Plus one of my neighbors told me that he had caught a 10 pounder in this SAME SPOT over a year ago and released him.

Well that was about a week and a half ago, so three days ago I decided to go back and try again in the morning. Well, sure enough, he hit hard as the salamander was coming off the side of a lilly pad. Not on the line 10 seconds and BOOM, just like that the line goes limp again; he cut it again.. The next day I went back with the same setup, this time in the evening about an hour before sunset. THREE casts later, BOOOOM!!! He pulverizes my salamander, and I start reeling but I make the fatal error of not keeping the rod tip up. I have him on the line for about 20 seconds at this point and CRAP, the line goes limp. Cut once again, but this time, MY FAULT. At this point, I am thinking, “what in the heck do I need to do to catch this bass?” Well, tonight same time, I go back to the same spot. I started out with live shiners but couldn't get him to bite, so I try the ol' salamander. only this time I have a 35 lb monofilament leader tied to the worm hook. I thought to myself, drag set?, check! Keep rod tip up? check! Heavy duty leader? check! No horsing him in? check, check!!

So I start casting and retrieving in the same spot, and three casts later, I feel a slight nudge, so I check to see if its a fish or a branch and by golly, its swimming!! So I give him a second and BOOM, I set the hook and start working him, trying to remember what not to screw up...and after about five minutes he is swimming under my boat and I am feeling good about him and just then, LORDY!! The line goes LIMP AGAIN!!! I pull up the line and to my horror, guess what I see? A BROKEN HOOK!!! That's four times dogged by the same fish and I am beginning to believe this fish is having fun doing me this way!!! Oh well, one of these days I will get him!!
