Well, I am originally from Los Angeles (30+ years) where fishing was a 2-3 hour (one-way) drive. Moved to Georgia in 1998 and purchased a house in a Lake Community. I purchased a Jon Boat (mostly due to the fact that I really cannot afford a $30,000 bass boat) because I like to fish SMALL waters as well. Here are a few tips I've learned fishing Jon Boats:

Don't overpack - Just take the bare minimum of what you need. I usually pack only two poles & 1 box. Space is a premium in a small boat, make the most of it.

Buy/Install items to help conserve space - I have oar/net holders, rod holders, storage areas set up for anchors, etc. Anything you can do to keep things organized means more time spent fishing instead of fooling with your boat.

Launch Smart - Small boats should not be used to make 20 mile runs, smaller fuel capacities mean shorter runs. Launch at the nearest facility to where you want to fish...There are hundreds of small boaters on Lake Oconee, GA making LONG runs every weekend - this makes for added danger on the water when boats are running from here to there ALL DAY.

Keep Your Tackle Organized - So many people I have fished with take a lot of tackle on my Jon Boat and spread it out all over the decks and floor looking for the "ONE" lure they know will bring in the Lunker! Pre-rig your poles for what you think will work, put similar lures in storage boxes and label them, plan your trip...don't try to take everything and sort it out on the water.

Do your best to keep your tackle neat and organized - again more time fishing, less time fooling with stuff.

I know there are many Jon Boat owners that have done some wonderful things with small boats. I hope we can hear from them as well.

Marcus
