My fishing partner and I have just started drop shot fishing this year. We have discovered that some very good fish can be caught using this method. We have been fishing Cherokee Lake in East Tennessee. The lake has a lot of smallmouth bass in the lower end where we have been fishing. We discovered that the smallmouth really like this method. We use the traditional drop shot rig, 1/8 or 1/4 ounce weight with 12" to 36" leader, with a 1 or 1/0 hook. We use 7'-0" light action rods with 6 lb test clear P-line. The only disadvantage on the line is the clear is extremely hard to see in bright sunlight. We have used several different lures, but Berkley 4" bungee worm has worked the best.

Most of the fish have been in the 20' to 25’ depth, the water temperature has been around 50 degrees. The best presentation is a vertical one, but we have caught several nice fish casting the rig and working it back. If you are casting and your line is twisting bad, you are working the rig too fast, this can be resolved by using a swivel or by slowing down. The hit is usually in the form of a mush feeling as you pick-up. Using the small hooks we haven't lost many fish. The water temperature has recently gotten into the low forties and our drop shot fishing seems to have slowed somewhat -- we have switched to float and fly fishing. If you get the chance, try drop shot fishing for smallmouth, you could really be surprised with the results.
