Our Bass Pro takes the Main Stage at the Lake Tomah Festival, proving he is not known as "The Bassmeister" for nothing!
June 15th, 2002
I can finally say it - I am exhausted! It has been a long haul this month, and I am anxious to get a weekend off some time soon. I have now gone every weekend since May 18th with some sort of bass related tournament or event on the books (with today being no exception). What even freaks me out more is the fact I have two more booked weekends to go before I FINALLY get one off before heading up to Canada for the Canadian Open. Yes, next weekend I will be doing some fishing seminars for a city of Milwaukee church’s summer fishing program, then I am off to the Mississippi River for the first tournament in the Northern Division of the Everstart Series the following week.
Don’t get me wrong - I love getting up on stage in front of people and sharing stories, techniques, and product demos - it is just that the time and travel just get to you after a while. The most important thing for me, though, is to keep myself composed and make sure that each seminar is just as good (if not better) than the last. This is important as I make sure to keep my sponsors in the spotlight and be available to talk one-on-one with the crowd as questions come up.
I got to spend the day at the Lake Tomah Family Festival, located in Tomah, Wisconsin. This was an event sponsored by Sparta radio station WCOW - Cow 97. It was a bit of a drive to get to this destination (it is actually closer to Minnesota than it is to my home town of Milwaukee, WI), but it made for a great chance to promote one of my terrific Canadian sponsors, Lucky Strike.
The seminar I presented was a brand new format I had been working on for the past couple of weeks - spinnerbait techniques. I must have looked like a fool in my truck, driving down the interstate, rehearsing my new dialogue out loud to myself. What can I say, I had a 2.5 hour drive to get there, and the least I could do to help pass the time was to practice my routine.
It was sort of fun doing the “small town” fair. There was a real sense of community at the festival - and everybody I got to meet from the Tomah/Sparta area was so nice and pleasant to talk with. I was the first act opening up on the main stage for the day - which really surprised me. Under no circumstance was I anticipating to be on the large main stage (I am not upset!), but it actually helped out being right next to the beer tent, as it drew an additional crowd beyond the die hard fans who made an effort to be at my spinnerbait seminar. It was also the first time I actually had a soundman working the PA system during my presentation. I felt so important!
As expected, the seminar went well, and I had the opportunity to meet with several anglers who had various questions about professional tournament fishing. I always love fielding questions from the public, no matter how easy or difficult they may be.
