Beautiful weather sets the stage for three children's fishing clinics at Milwaukee's largest Christian Music Festival.

June 9th, 2002

Today was the final day of the Fisherman’s Festival - and you guessed it, I was doing fishing seminars once again! The Fisherman’s Festival is noted as being the largest Christian music festival in the city of Milwaukee, my home town. Needless to say, the highlight of the event was both the various Christian music artists and the collection of amusement rides that coated the festival grounds. That did not stop me from getting involved, as I put on three children’s fishing clinics on the “family stage.” It was a wonderful time.
We started out on Saturday the 8th, where I was requested to do two different seminars - one at noon, and another at 6:00 PM. The majority of the clinic participants were children in the age group of 4 years to 13 years - so I realized that I needed to make some slight alterations in my program. It is always a good idea to have a few different topics and seminar styles put together, because you never know what the make-up of your audience is. Thank goodness I have a children-geared program that is set up for such events. After all, I was following such acts at the “Science Guy” and “Twinkles The Clown.” Note: I feel that the clown scared off most of my crowd rather than helping get them prepared for my presentation. It was sort of like having a Kenny Rogers impersonator opening up for Metallica - the crowd got bored and left before the main act got underway! Oh, well.
I finished up with one additional children’s clinic on Sunday afternoon, at 4:00 PM. The festival provided a wonderful time, and the staff in the Family Activity Area of the festival treated my family and I very well. This was an even more exceptional opportunity for me, as it was the first seminar I have ever done with my 5 month old son sitting in the audience watching me. Granted, he was a bit too young to get much out of the fishing clinic, but it was just so rewarding to see my immediate family (as well as some extended family as my parents, in-laws, and friends stopped by this local event) smiling back at me from the audience.
One thing about being a pro angler, that many tournament professionals do not take the time to do, is to dedicate time towards the children in our community. Children are our future, and sponsors know this. Just blowing off the children, or keeping your attention focused on adult-only crowds does not present the highest level broad-spectrum promotions. Remember this if you are ever working in the promotions arena with sponsors you may have.
Now, I need to start getting myself focused for the Everstart Series coming up at the end of the month in Red Wing, Minnesota. It will be a relief to get back into the tournament swing-of-things after my heavy June schedule of speaking engagements (that is probably not over as of yet)!
